Abstract

Despite significant advances in the study of the problems of acute pancreatitis, the pathogenesis of this disease is not fully understood. The primary role of immune mechanisms in the development of acute pancreatitis has been proven, but what is leading – excessive immune aggression or immunosuppression, adaptive or innate immune response mechanisms – is still unclear. Further study of the role of cytokines and other low molecular weight mediators of inflammation in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis is the key to understanding the development of this disease, possible early prediction of its course and outcome, as well as the development of new treatments.
